Your helmet is the one piece of gear you hope never to test. Most people pick one on looks and price, then find out on the first long ride that it presses on the forehead, fogs up or whistles at 80 km/h. Here’s how to choose properly, with options from the Studds and SMK ranges we stock.
Start with the law: ISI only
Every helmet sold for two-wheeler use in India must carry ISI certification to IS 4151. Look for the ISI mark on the helmet and the box. Every helmet we sell has it, but check if you’re buying anywhere else.
Pick the type for how you ride
| Type | Good for | Think about |
|---|---|---|
| Full face | Highways, touring, riding in rain | The most protection, since it covers the chin. Can feel warm in traffic. |
| Flip-up (modular) | Daily riders who stop often | Lift the front to talk or drink without taking it off. A little heavier than full face. |
| Open face | City riding, classic bikes | Cool and easy to wear, but there’s no chin protection. |
| Off-road | Trails and dirt | A peak and wide eye port, made to be worn with goggles. |
If you ride a Royal Enfield on the highway, we’d steer you towards a full face or flip-up. Open face helmets suit the look of a Classic or Bullet, but they leave your chin exposed.
Studds or SMK?
Both are Indian brands, so you’re not paying import margins for either.
Studds covers the everyday price range and has the widest choice of styles. Look at double visor models like the Ninja 3G Double Visor: a clear outer visor plus a drop-down sun visor inside, which is useful when you ride into the evening. The Thunder CR has a battery-powered LED light built in to make you easier to see.
SMK sits a step up. Many SMK full face and flip-up models come with a Pinlock anti-fog film in the box, and that makes a real difference in monsoon and winter mornings. The range runs from the Nova and Typhoon up to the Titan Carbon. The Gullwing is SMK’s flip-up, also with Pinlock included.

Fogging visor? A Pinlock film is the single best fix. Check whether the helmet says “Pinlock included” or “Pinlock ready”. Ready means the visor accepts the insert, but you buy it separately.
Get the size right
A helmet that’s too big moves on your head at speed. One that’s too small gives you a headache in half an hour. Measure like this:
- Wrap a soft tape around the widest part of your head, about 2 cm above your eyebrows and just above your ears.
- Measure twice and use the larger number.
- Match it to the size: S is 55–56 cm, M is 57–58 cm, L is 59–60 cm, XL is 61–62 cm.
- Between two sizes? Try the smaller one first. A new helmet should feel snug, and the padding settles by about half a size.
Our helmet size guide has the full chart and fit checks. Brands also run slightly differently, so if you’re unsure, WhatsApp us your measurement and the helmet you like, and we’ll confirm the size before we ship.
Signs a helmet fits
- The cheek pads press gently on your cheeks.
- With the strap done up, it doesn’t roll forward when someone pushes the back.
- After ten minutes there’s no pressure point on your forehead.
For kids and teenagers
Children need a helmet that fits their head now, not one to grow into. The SMK Bionic Youth is a full face made for younger riders, and Studds makes the Marshall Kids open face.
