Interceptor 650 and Continental GT 650 Touring Build

How to make the 650 twins comfortable on long rides: seats, screens, engine protection and luggage that keep the clean look.

Interceptor 650 and Continental GT 650 Touring Build

The Interceptor 650 and Continental GT 650 share an engine and most of their accessories, so this guide covers both. The parallel twin is happy at highway speeds all day. The rider usually gives up first. Here’s how to fix that without losing the clean 60s look.

If the rear suspension is what bothers you most, read our 650 twins rear shock guide first. This one is about everything else.

A seat you can sit on all day

On the Interceptor, the Deluxe Touring Dual Seat is the one to get for long distances. Its base is 33% wider at the sit bones than the stock seat, with dual-density foam and a 3D net layer on top. It’s made for the Interceptor 650 only, and it’s water resistant rather than fully waterproof, so it can hold some water after a long downpour before drying out.

The Premium Touring Dual Seat uses thicker foam with ribbed vinyl and white piping, for a more vintage look. On the Continental GT, the painted dual seat cowl goes with the dual touring seat for a proper café racer look; that cowl is for the GT only.

Wind protection, three sizes

Engine protection

The twins have wide engines, so the cylinder heads and covers take the hit in a fall. The Compact Engine Guards are 25 mm stainless steel and protect the key engine areas without affecting ground clearance. The Large Engine Guards cover more of the engine for riders who go off the tarmac.

Two smaller parts are worth adding. The Oil Cooler Guard protects the oil cooler fins from stones kicked up by the front tyre, and the Large Sumpguard protects the engine and frame rails underneath.

Luggage

The Soft Panniers are water-resistant roll-tops with 8.5 litres a side and quick-release straps, so you can carry them off the bike like a bag. They need the Soft Pannier Rails, which are low-profile 16 mm stainless steel and don’t spoil the look when the bags are off.

Navigation and grip

The Tripper and Mount adds Royal Enfield’s Tripper navigation pod, with the bracket and power cable included. Tank Pads help you grip the tank with your knees, which takes strain off your arms on long rides, and they protect the paint.
